The project

The 1,033km West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) – one of the most ambitious projects to date – runs both on and offshore from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region to Effasu in the west of Ghana. It is set to save West African Nations $500m in energy costs over 20 years – as predicted by the World Bank.

Serimax was contracted by a supplier of marine construction services around the world to provide a full range of welding services, including equipment, qualification of procedures and maintenance.

The results

Much of Serimax's work on this contract was focused on preventative maintenance. Carried out efficiently and effectively, it created a virtuous circle: good maintenance of equipment leads to low downtime and therefore high laying-rates.

A repair rate of 0.25% across 46,664 welds from September 2005 to June 2006 was testament to the quality of workmanship, equipment and maintenance on this demanding project. What's more, the Serimax-managed team exceeded the target daily laying-rate by around 10%.

We were set a target laying-rate of 269 welds per day. Already an ambitious goal, the team achieved an actual average rate of 295 (including a high of 428) welds per day across the course of the contract.

This combination of speed and efficiency led to a positive evaluation of Serimax’s contribution to the project. The client scored our performance as 'very good' on productivity, assistance provided, attitude towards safety and preparation/shipment of equipment.

We are delighted to have made a significant contribution towards a project that is set to create 10,000-20,000 primary sector jobs in the region.
