Christian McGallagher's southern accent immediately identifies him as being from one of the world's most intensive oil and gas regions – Alabama, USA. Christian started working with the Serimax group in 2000, as a welder on the Gulfstream Natural Gas System – at that time, the world's largest oilfield project. Since then, he's racked up a number of high profile welding achievements, with some impressive statistics.
"We set a record for the number of welds in a 12-hour shift on the Devil's Tower project in the Gulf of Mexico," says Christian. "And I've worked on the deepest reel-lay for Shell."
Christian is now supervising up to 50 welders, bevellers, helpers and spacers on up to five different contracts at a time – but still likes to keep his hand in with actual welding work.
"I still get involved in the welding, if someone's off sick, for example. We work long hours, and we’re always dealing with the elements – down here in the South, the heat can be really draining. There's always challenges, and it's real satisfying when a job is complete, knowing that you've been a part of something that can make the world news."
