Serimax: offshore welding and marine welders

Serimax

Working at Serimax

Malcolm Watt

Regional HSEQ Manager

“When I joined the company in 2005, I bought into the vision of creating a centre of excellence in the Highlands,” says Malcolm Watt.

“And I’m proud of the fact that, by and large, we’ve achieved what we set out to do. We have robust management systems for health and safety, environmental management and quality. And we have achieved DET, Norske, Veritas third-party accreditation to ISO and OHSAS for these business management processes.”

Having originally joined the group as QA Manager, Malcolm has been promoted to HSEQ Manager, and now to Regional HSEQ Manager of the expanded Serimax organisation during his two years with the company.

“Perhaps the biggest challenge facing us all today is that of making a personal commitment to becoming incident free. We are concentrating on ensuring that all of our business processes and controls give everyone a common purpose. Thankfully, one of the great things about this company is the fact that everyone works as a team to make sure the job gets done.”

As one of the few companies in the UK that has an apprenticeship programme, Serimax is looking after the future as well as the present. The programme is now run 100% internally, and the company is qualified to offer Engineering NVQs – these are internationally recognised qualifications – not just to our own people, but to external students.

“The training side of the business is encouraging for everyone,” says Malcolm. “It gives us confidence that our people and the young apprentices coming through are highly skilled, competent and are committed to our health, safety and quality values.”

“The combined Serimax group is still a relatively new company, and we’re consistently growing so there’s opportunity for anyone who’s willing to pick up the ball and run with it.”
